greyscale tutorial by YOB greyscale tutorial by YOB
This tutorial is assuming those of you who take this tutorial, will be familiar with its short keys and in general the way it works.

If you have any questions ask away :)

Please refer to my two tutorials, how I colour and how I do manes, and adapt them to greyscale.

I've never used GIMP, so I am usure of the tools you can use within it, but if you can see a pointers you can apply to the program, I'm sure you could use it in GIMP :)

sorry for not being much help here though!

I think I trip up mainly on legs and face/eyes

This is very helpful! I can't use it though -o- (one of the many disadvantages of being a traditional artist, I suppose)

I never thought to use the levels thingy. If/when I use the greyscale technique I do the same as you up until the levels bit. I use the brush set to Color, or sometimes some of the other modes to lighten and darken. :) And my way of making socks when I work this way is stupidly longwinded :XD: I make a copy of the original body layer, turn the whole thing into a white coat, then erase the bits I don't want...
