I think the imagery worked beautifully to explain it. The only part that didnt feel as smooth was the line "and all his hurt struck at her heart like it had happened to her personally"

Maybe something like "all his hurt burned through her heart as she relived it"

Just a suggestion!

I am very hooked on this story! :)
